Ziema ir piepildīta ne tikai ar Jaungada brīvdienām. Mēs nedrīkstam aizmirst par tiem radījumiem, kas dzīvo mums blakus. Lai gan mēs viņus neredzam, mēs vienmēr jūtam viņu klātbūtni. Mājas gariņš ir sena mītiska būtne, kas mīt katrā mājā. Mūsu senči pret šo mājas iemītnieku izturējās ar lielu cieņu. Tas, vai mājā valdīs harmonija un tās iemītnieku veselība, bija atkarīgs no viņa garastāvokļa. Ja mājā sāka pazust lietas, priekšmeti nokrita paši, tas nozīmēja, ka mājas gariņš bija ar kaut ko neapmierināts. Sliktāk ir tad, ja mājas gariņš naktī sāka žņaugt savus saimniekus vai ģimenē pienākusi šausmīga slimība.

Šajā dienā mājas gariņam vienmēr tika dota bļoda ar pienu un cienasts piparkūku vai cepumu veidā. Mājas gariņš ir ļoti liels saldummīlis un piena cienītājs.

Senos laikos tā galvenā dzīvotne bija plīts, aiz kuras tas slēpās dienas laikā. Bet naktī viņš iznāca no savas slēptuves un staigāja pa māju kā īsts saimnieks. Mājsaimnieces vienmēr pie plīts novietoja bļodu ar pienu, lai mājas gariņš varētu redzēt kārumu.
